Our Work
The Palliative Care Council is responsible for providing the Minister of Health with independent strategic advice on issues related to palliative and end-of-life care.
The PCC will provide advice in seven main areas:
- Access to essential services for people with life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses
- Service models/frameworks for palliative care services
- Palliative and end-of-life care needs of specific population groups
- Workforce requirements
- Equity of access
- Sector data and information
- Palliative and end-of-life care research
The PCC will also report on New Zealand’s performance in providing palliative and end-of life care and provide other advice as requested by, or by agreement with, the Minister of Health.
PCC’s 2010-2012 work programme includes the following areas:
- Completing Phase 2 of the National Health Needs Assessment for Palliative Care
- Undertaking monitoring and evaluation of palliative care using the Managing for Outcomes framework
- Evaluating palliative care provision in Aged Residential Care
- Evaluating palliative care provision by primary care
